McCABE’S PRESENTS: AN EVENING WITH SHEL TALMY – Interview + Video & Aural Rarities

‘You Really Got Me’, ‘My Generation’, ‘I Can’t Explain’, ‘Sunny Afternoon’, ‘Friday On My Mind’. . . pioneer producer Shel Talmy’s work with legendary British rock groups The Kinks, The Who and others in the mid-1960s introduced a dynamism to contemporary music that was unprecedented. These visionary productions helped changed the course of rock and pop and they remain musically influential across generations. Any survey of the most essential Rock and Pop recordings of the 1960s must include something Shel produced.

A soft spoken but confident 25 year-old Chicago native who transplanted himself to the UK in 1962, just prior to the British Invasion, Talmy became a vital cog in British rock’s ascendency. His reputation as a hitmaker was established shortly after he connived his way into an A&R job at UK Decca. Shel then went on to become one of the first fully independent producers in the business and throughout the decade was responsible for major chart successes by The Easybeats, Chad & Jeremy, Manfred Mann and Amen Corner.

Talmy frequently mentored up and coming talent, signing David Bowie to his first significant publishing contract, producing trailblazing all-woman band Goldie & The Gingerbreads, and supervising records by major cult artists such as The Creation, Roy Harper and Lee Hazlewood, along with dozens of beat, mod, R&B, rock and pop acts, all of which bear the Talmy Touch. He was first to regularly employ the likes of Glyn Johns as engineer, and Jimmy Page and Nicky Hopkins as session musicians. Originally trained as an engineer himself, Shel’s work with seminal and innovative folk-rock ensemble The Pentangle is highly regarded for its sonic quality.

McCabes is proud to present an extraordinary evening with Shel, in conversation with his colleague, curator and music historian Alec Palao. They will discuss in detail his captivating career and the creation of many of his signature productions, while tapping his sagacious perceptions upon the role of a producer. This very special event will feature hand-picked visual and aural presentations culled from Talmy’s exclusive archives. Not to be missed – consider yourselves informed.
