Las Vegas–based singer-songwriter Ted Sablay has been touring guitarist for The Killers since 2006 and the band’s musical director since 2022. State & Motion, his second full-length album, follows 2022’s You’ll Be Back Here Soon. It’s ten songs and 38 minutes, with Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello) on drums and Whynot Jansveld (The Wallflowers) on bass. “This record is, fundamentally, about the difference between bearing something and choosing something,” Sablay says.
The questions behind it surfaced during the pandemic shutdown. “Who am I if I’m not onstage?” he asks. The songs took shape after an opening slot for Chris Isaak, and he wrote them to stand on their own: “Whatever I do, I want to be able to play it on an acoustic guitar and make it work.” At McCabe’s, that’s exactly how you’ll hear them.
