Pete Steinberg

Pete Steinberg was born in 1948.  He began playing guitar at 16 when he heard a recording of Mississippi John Hurt playing Stagolee.  1963 was a golden age for guitar players as it was in the middle of the “folk boom”.
Pete spent all his money and time at McCabe’s and the Ash Grove – both legendary Folk and Blues centers – where he learned from country blues icons like Lightnin’ Hopkins, Rev. Gary Davis, Mississippi Fred Macdowell, Bukka White, Johny Shines and Mance Lipscomb.  He learned bottleneck guitar from Bukka White, and finally met his boyhood hero, Mississippi John Hurt at the Gaslight while “hoboing” in New York (an unfortunate lifestyle choice) and again at the Ashgrove.  While other kids were waiting for the next album from the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, Pete was waiting for the next album from John Hurt.
He has won the Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Finger Style Guitar competition the four times he entered, The Southwestern Fingerstyle championship in 1999, Utah State championship in 2010 and Wyoming State Championship in 2012.  He teaches fingerstyle guitar at McCabe’s Guitar shop and is the only instructor there who has actually wrestled a bear.  You will find his show enjoyable and entertaining, but the management recommends that you do not offer him a ride or whiskey and do not lend him money.
