Jake Xerxes Fussell w/ special guest Tom Brosseau

$20.00

Singer, guitarist, and folk music interpreter Jake Xerxes Fussell has distinguished  himself as one of his generation’s preeminent interpreters of traditional (and not so  traditional) “folk” songs, a practice which he approaches with a refreshingly unfussy lack  of nostalgia. By recontextualizing ancient vernacular songs and sources of the American  South, he allows them to breathe and speak for themselves and for himself; he  alternately inhabits them and allows them to inhabit him. In all his work, Fussell  humanizes his material with his own profound curatorial and interpretive gifts,  unmooring stories and melodies from their specific eras and origins and setting them  adrift in our own waterways.

Fussell’s new album Good and Green Again is set for release on Jan 21, 2022 via  Paradise of Bachelors. Produced by James Elkington, Good and Green Again navigates  fresh sonic and compositional landscapes and is his most conceptually focused and  breathtakingly rendered to-date. Fussell and Elkington enlisted a group of formidable  players hailing from Durham, North Carolina (where Fussell lives) and elsewhere,  including regular bandmembers Casey Toll on upright bass, Libby Rodenbough on  strings, and Nathan Golub on pedal steel. They were joined by welcome newcomers  Joe Westerlund (Megafaun, Califone) on drums, Joseph Decosimo on fiddle, Anna  Jacobson on brass, and Bonnie “Prince” Billy, who contributes additional vocals.

Tom Brosseau

Tom Brosseau is a songwriter, a keen listener, with a deep reservoir of American folk music in  his soul, a writer who looks back with an eye forward. Brosseau has crafted disparate recordings of his into an album series, A Lifetime Ago, Volumes 1, 2, and 3. Unreleased and rare  recordings, some you have heard and will hear anew, early recordings and some quite recent.  For Volume 2, host Doug Schulkind and WFMU graciously gave permission to curate 2004 and  2006 on-air Give The Drummer Some sessions for release.

To celebrate this collection, Tom will tour with a like-minded musical compadre, Jake Xerxes  Fussell. Expect songs from these archives and, perhaps, a new song or two from this prolific  songwriter. As Tom says, “In the end, a composition becomes a song because the audience is  there to help it along, and from there it takes on a life of its own. I live to set them free. “

Brosseau hosts a monthly Prairie Public NPR program, The Great American Folk Show, with  guests including Peter Rowan and the Milk Carton Kids. Brosseau has been featured on NPR’s  All Songs Considered, Weekend Edition, and First Watch, as well as Cerys Matthews BBC6  acclaimed show. He was invited to create a playlist fo Smithsonian Folkways, and his songs  appear in Judd Apatow’s Netflix series, Love, and in Showtime’s Shameless. John Parish (PJ  Harvey) produced Brosseau’s Perfect Abandon (2015): Brosseau with a 3-piece combo recorded in Bristol UK, live to one mic.
