We first came across Quiles and Cloud when they opened for Jeffrey
Foucault last year and have been watching them ever since. Their
haunting high lonesome sound reminds us of Gillian Welch and Dave
Rawlings, mixed with Sean and Sara Watkins. Having met while playing
the sidewalks of San Francisco in the fall of 2011, Maria Quiles and
Rory Cloud quickly became musical gypsies, giving up their apartments
and day jobs and spending the next few years crisscrossing the
country, releasing two albums, winning the FreshGrass award for Best
Duo, and enjoying success thanks to their critically acclaimed NPR
Tiny Desk concert performance. Now they’re celebrating the release of
the brand new, Beyond the Rain album, produced in Nashville by Grammy
winner Alison Brown. Joining them tonight will be longtime
collaborator Oscar Westesson on bass. Their musical chemistry is
marvelous, and together they dig deep into love and longing, risking
it all for the perfect moment, the feeling that endures. Sharing this
bill is songbird Allison Pierce who, with The Pierces (with sister
Catherine), made quite a splash in the early part of the decade with a
country tinged folk Americana sound and consequent title song for the
hit television series Pretty Little Liars. Her first solo effort is
the brand new Year Of The Rabbit, produced by Ethan John ( Ray
Lamontagne, Paul McCartney), of which NPR Music calls “a gem — a big,
consistently ingratiating batch of brightly rendered, sweetly hooky
songs about growing up, getting smart and refashioning yourself into
the person you need to be.”
Both of these acts have something special going on. Discover them both
tonight with this tasty double bill.
